Average heart rate summarizes cardiovascular response across a recorded workout, but it does not describe every interval, hill, pause, sensor error, or environmental condition. Compare it only across similar activities and contexts, and keep duration, pace or output, terrain, and perceived effort beside it. Use trends as training context—not medical conclusions.

Compare similar exposures
Over time, a similar pace at a lower perceived effort and heart rate may be encouraging, but temperature, hydration, fatigue, medication, and device behavior can change readings. Avoid ranking unlike routes or modalities by average heart rate alone.
Example: compare a 5 km flat easy run with recent flat easy runs—not with hill repeats or a strength circuit that happened to average the same heart rate.
