The numbering does not transfer unchanged: in a common three-zone research model, low-intensity work below the first ventilatory or lactate threshold is Zone 1, while Zone 2 lies between the first and second thresholds. State the system you use, then pair it with speech, effort, and session context rather than treating one heart-rate formula as universal.

Define the zone before using the label

This guide uses “Zone 2” in a common five-zone consumer sense: an easy aerobic band above the lightest zone. A common three-zone research model labels work below the first ventilatory or lactate threshold as Zone 1 and reserves Zone 2 for the range between the first and second thresholds. Write down the system or device convention you are using so identical labels do not hide different intensities.

Heart-rate boundaries based on age, maximum heart rate, or a device default are estimates. Heat, hydration, fatigue, medication, sensor error, and cardiac drift can also change the reading. Treat heart rate as context rather than proof that the session occupied a precise physiological domain or produced a specific adaptation.

Use speech and effort as field checks

The talk test is a low-equipment way to check intensity. If you can speak comfortably in complete sentences, you are likely below the point where speech becomes distinctly strained. Research supports the talk test as a practical regulator around physiological thresholds, but it remains an estimate and is less useful during brief, rapidly changing efforts.

Pair speech with a simple effort score and breathing description. For example: “RPE 3 of 10, full sentences, breathing settled after climbs.” If conversation becomes broken or effort rises steadily, reduce speed, resistance, or incline if the goal is to keep the session easy. Walking is a valid adjustment when terrain or current fitness demands it.

Use one consistent zone definition, then record the cues that show how the session actually felt.

Log enough to compare like with like

Record modality, duration, distance or output when relevant, average effort, talk-test result, and optional heart rate. Add route, elevation, treadmill incline, temperature, or equipment only when they explain the result. A useful entry might read: “Bike — 45 min, RPE 3, full-sentence talk test throughout, average HR 137, indoor trainer, same resistance as last week.”

For a run: “38 min, 6.2 km, conversational except final hill, RPE 3, 24°C and humid.” This is more honest than writing only “Zone 2, 6.2 km,” because it records both the intended intensity and the conditions that influenced pace and heart rate.

  • Required: activity, duration, and the intensity method used
  • Useful: distance, pace, power, resistance, or heart rate
  • Context: route, incline, temperature, surface, and interruptions
  • Quality check: speech, breathing, and end-of-session effort

Review consistency before chasing speed

Compare sessions with a similar modality, route, duration, and effort cue. Over time, more pace or output at comparable effort may be useful evidence of change. One faster day is not enough, especially if weather, terrain, equipment, or heart-rate measurement changed.

Not necessarily. Pace varies with terrain, weather, fatigue, and measurement. Review several comparable sessions at similar effort rather than expecting a faster number every time.
