Volume load vs. hard sets: which metric should you track?

Understand tonnage and working-set counts, avoid cross-exercise comparisons, and choose the metric that answers your actual training question.

Volume load—sets × reps × external load—describes logged tonnage, while hard-set counts describe how many working sets met a chosen effort or prescription. Neither is a complete dose measure. Use volume load within the same exercise and convention; use working sets to summarize comparable training without pretending every set or exercise has equal effect.

Know what the arithmetic includes

Volume load rises when sets, reps, or external load rise. That makes it useful for checking the same lift across similar sessions. It becomes misleading when dumbbell conventions change, bodyweight is invented, machine labels differ, or a short-range lift is compared with a full-range one.

Pick the metric after the question

For “did bench work increase?” volume load and set details may help. For “how many meaningful chest sets did I complete?” a working-set count can be clearer, though muscle contribution is not binary. Avoid one dashboard score that erases these assumptions.

Example: 3 × 10 × 50 kg is 1,500 kg of logged volume load. It does not prove greater stimulus than every session with a smaller number.

Keep definitions stable

State whether warm-ups, drop sets, unilateral sides, assisted movements, and machine settings enter the calculation. When the convention changes, mark the date. A transparent imperfect metric is safer than a precise total with hidden rules.

Does more volume load always mean a better workout?

No. Exercise choice, range, effort, technique, and goal affect interpretation; more is not automatically better.

What counts as a hard set?

Define it for the plan—often a working set completed within a target proximity to failure—rather than assuming every recorded set is equal.

You can report the arithmetic, but comparisons across exercises and equipment require strong caveats and should not be treated as a universal training dose.
