If the goal is to improve a heavy one-repetition maximum, some training should expose you to relatively heavy loads. Lower-repetition sets develop skill and force production under conditions that resemble the test. That specificity helps explain why higher-load programs tend to produce larger gains in measured maximal strength.
Heavy work does not require constant maximal attempts. Sets of several controlled repetitions can provide specific practice while leaving room for repeatable technique. Exercise selection matters too: a low-repetition squat or press has a different skill and risk profile from a low-repetition lateral raise.
Muscle can grow across a broad loading range
Reviews comparing low-, moderate-, and high-load resistance training find that hypertrophy can be similar across a broad spectrum when the work is challenging enough. That does not mean every range feels or functions the same. Very light loads usually require many repetitions and close proximity to failure, while very heavy loads create more joint and setup demands per repetition.
Moderate ranges are popular because they balance load, repetition practice, time, and fatigue. They are a useful default rather than a biological boundary. A muscle does not stop responding when a set moves from twelve repetitions to thirteen, and a set of five is not automatically only for strength.
Rep ranges describe how the work is performed. Load, effort, total sets, technique, and progression determine what that range becomes in practice.
Match the range to the exercise and the week
Use lower or moderate repetitions for movements where load progression and stable technique are priorities. Use moderate or higher repetitions when the exercise is easier to control, loading jumps are large, or lower loads reduce an unnecessary setup cost. A program can include several ranges without turning every session into a different experiment.
Keep at least one range stable long enough to judge progress. You might perform a primary press for sets of four to six, a secondary row for six to ten, and a smaller isolation movement for ten to fifteen or more. These are practical zones, not rigid rules, and the final repetitions should still look like the exercise you intended to train.

A rep-range label is incomplete without the result. Record the load, repetitions actually completed, and an effort measure such as RPE, RIR, or a plain-language note. Five repetitions with four left in reserve does not represent the same demand as five repetitions at the edge of failure.

No. It is an efficient and practical range, not an exclusive growth zone. Lower and higher repetitions can also support hypertrophy when effort, volume, and technique are appropriate.
When should I change my rep range?
Change it when the current range no longer fits the goal, exercise, available load jumps, or fatigue profile—not because the calendar demands variety. Preserve enough continuity to evaluate whether the change helped.
