Unilateral workout logging

How to log unilateral exercises: reps per side without double-counting

Use a clear per-side convention for split squats, rows, presses, carries, and rehab-style work while preserving left-right differences.

The short answer

Record reps per side for unilateral exercises and say so in the exercise convention. “Single-arm row — 25 kg × 10/side” is clearer than entering 20 total reps. If the sides differ, log them separately instead of averaging away an imbalance you may need next time.

Keep both sides honest

Preserve per-side reps without mental arithmetic.

LogFast keeps load, reps per side, and left-right differences attached to the exact unilateral exercise.

Choose a count that survives next week

Per-side reps map directly to the next set: ten each side is written as ten per side. For alternating repetitions, a total count can work, but label it. The goal is not one universal notation; it is removing the mental conversion when you revisit the session.

  • Equal sides: load × reps/side
  • Unequal sides: left and right on separate lines
  • Carry: load, distance or time, and side
  • Alternating reps: label total or per-side count

Keep load conventions simple

Record the implement load used by the working side. A one-arm row with a 30 kg dumbbell is 30 kg, not 60 kg because both sides trained. If two loads differ, preserve each side rather than reporting their average.

Worked example: “rear-foot-elevated split squat — 20 kg goblet, 8/side × 3.” If the left side completed 8, 8, 7, write that difference.

Compare like setups

Stance, support, range, and which side starts can affect performance. Keep meaningful setup changes in the exercise name or note. A clean per-side history is more useful than doubled volume that hides how the set was performed.

Frequently asked questions

Is ten reps each leg ten or twenty?

Log ten per side when the field represents reps for the exercise. If your app explicitly asks for total repetitions, enter twenty and keep that system consistent.

Should both sides use the weaker side's reps?

That can be a programming choice, but the log should record what each side actually completed.

How do I log suitcase carries?

Record implement load, distance or duration per side, and whether the sides differed.
